What to Expect

A patient sent for an MRI scan typically requires no preparation or dietary restrictions. A simple explanation of the procedure and thorough check for contraindications are all that are required prior to the exam. 

Upon arriving at Thumb MRI Center you will be asked to complete several pages of paperwork. 

You may download and complete these before your arrival by clicking the Patient Forms. We will copy your insurance cards, ID and collect any outside CDs you may have brought with you. We will also ask for your doctor's order. After you are done with your paperwork a technologist will take you to a private changing suite where they will go over the paperwork and explain the procedure. Feel free at any time to ask any questions that you may have.

You will be asked to remove anything metallic (jewelry, eyeglasses, watches etc.) We advise that any of these items that you don't need be locked in your car or left at home, however we do offer a secure locker for your items.

A typical exam lasts from 30-45 minutes. You will also be offered music to listen to during the scan. We have a variety of music to choose from, or you may bring your own CD. To begin the exam, you will lie down on the padded scan table. When the scanner begins, you will hear some gentle tapping sounds. These sounds occur whenever the MRI pictures are being taken. Think of them as the clicks of a very large camera. 

An MRI is completely painless. The only thing that you must do is HOLD STILL. If you move the scans will be out of focus and you may have to repeat the exam. If ordered by your Doctor, you may be injected with a solution called a "contrast agent." MRI contrast agents typically have few side effects. Some patients may be required to obtain blood work prior to your appointment if contrast is prescribed so the correct dose can be given.

When your scan is finished, the technologist will assist you off of the table and direct you back to the changing suite or the front lobby. You will receive a copy of your MRI on a CD to take to your doctor. 

Your doctor will receive a written report via fax within 24 hours of your exam. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to express them to the receptionist or the technologist. We want to do everything possible to make your experience at the Thumb MRI Center a comfortable and pleasant one.
